They say good things come in small packages and hopefully that’s the case this Wednesday when we host a six-race metropolitan program.
Unfortunately, the wet weather that has plagued the region in recent times is still hanging about with a storm forecast on race day.
We’ve put in the hard work for you and provided our top picks in each race below.
Race 1 - 1:38PM BARRIER REEF POOLS Maiden Handicap (1350 METRES)
7 She’s Got Lyrics
She’s Got Lyrics looks well placed to break through for her first win at start number seven.
The Tony Gollan-trained Rubick mare dropped back to the tail when drawing the outside gate over this course and distance last start before letting down strongly in the final furlong to finish a head second.
She’ll be at peak fitness now and will carry just 53.5kg after Emily Lang’s claim.
She has drawn a rare, good gate so she should enjoy a nice run.
Selections: 7-2-3-8
Race 2 - 2:13PM GORDON'S GIN Class 4 Handicap (1700 METRES)
4 Disney Castle
Disney Castle was luckless when finishing eighth in a stronger race over 1600m at Doomben last start.
The Chris Waller-trained mare was full of running in the straight but never saw daylight and went to the line untested, finishing 6.1 lengths behind the winner.
She won two starts back at Eagle Farm and is a previous winner at the track.
Bailey Wheeler, who claims 1.5kg, can give her the run of the race from barrier 2.
Selections: 4-1-3-7
Race 3 - 2:48PM TAB Class 1 Handicap (1700 METRES)
2 Autumn Miss
Autumn Miss resumes here on the back of two trials with the most recent producing a solid piece of work in heavy conditions at Deagon.
The Neasham & Archibald-trained daughter of The Autumn Sun ran well in her first preparation with a 1.5 length second to Velozes on debut before leading all the way for a 2.23 length win over this course and distance at her second start.
Unfortunately, she was found to have poor recovery at her third start and was spelled.
Bailey Wheeler should be able to settle handy.
Selections: 2-5-1-4
Race 4 - 3:23PM TAE AEROSPACE QTIS Three-Year-Old Fillies Maiden Plate (1200 METRES)
2 Becca
Becca heads to the races for the first time following three trials across two preparations.
The David Vandyke-trained Better Than Ready filly went straight to the front in her most recent piece of work and cruised to an easy win in the heavy conditions at the Sunshine Coast.
It was a similar outcome when she won a trial at Deagon in July.
She has the early speed to cross and find a prominent position for Ronnie Stewart.
Selections: 2-10-1-8
Race 5 - 3:58PM IMPERIAL RACING BENCHMARK 65 Handicap (1350 METRES)
4 Gospel Girl
I’m prepared to put a line through Gospel Girl’s last start effort in a stronger race at Doomben when she finished near last but was found to have poor post recovery so obviously had an issue.
The Tony Gollan-trained mare was very good the start prior when letting down powerfully over 1200m at the Sunshine Coast to win by just under a length with third 2.5 lengths away.
In her only previous start over this course and distance, she led but weakened late to finish 1.9 lengths fourth but she’s at peak fitness now.
She maps to get a great run for Angela Jones.
Selections: 4-1-10-5
Race 6 - 4:33PM GREAT NORTHERN BENCHMARK 68 Handicap (1100 METRES)
8 Sultry Siren
Sultry Siren has raced well since joining Rob Heathcote’s stable this preparation.
The daughter of Snitzel enjoyed getting her toe in the ground two starts back when storming home to win by a length over 1200m at Doomben and gave a big sight last start at that same venue when running into the above average Taltarni Fields and finishing a close second.
She drops back to 1100m but that won’t pose a problem given she won over this distance at Doomben first-up.
Bailey Wheeler’s claim comes in handy, and the young hoop should be able to find a nice spot just behind what looks like a strong speed.
Selections: 8-1-6-4
