Meeting In Review – Wednesday 5 February 2025 New

Date: 06-Feb-2025

Wednesday’s Ipswich meeting was a day for doubles with three jockeys each riding two winners across the seven-race program.

Georgie Cartwright was the first rider to claim a double when she piloted her mounts to victory in the opening two races of the day.

She teamed up with Hidden Nugget who was making his debut in the Maiden Plate over 800m.

The Darren Bell-trained son of Spirit Of Boom had looked good at the trials and took that form to the races.

In heavy rain, Cartwright drove Hidden Nugget to the lead and was never headed, dashing clear late to win by 1.2 lengths.

Cartwright wasted no time in registering her second win of the day when she partnered Deceitful Miss in the second race on the card, the QTIS Two-Year-Old Maiden Plate.

Following a quick getaway, Cartwright eased the Dubious filly back so she wasn’t caught wide early in the 1200m contest.

With those in front of her fanning entering the straight, Cartwright snuck up the inside before getting off the heels of the red-hot favourite Cool Miss.

The pair raced away to win by 1.1 lengths and creating a lot of confetti from the tickets of those punters that took the $1.35 for Cool Miss.

Vlad Duric claimed the third race on the program, the Maiden Handicap over 1350m with Pele Princess.

The Brett Baker-trained mare was having her first race since August and wasn’t respected by the market as a $17 chance.

However, that market support mattered little as the Toowoomba galloper stormed home down the centre of the track from the back to win comfortably by two lengths.

Duric combined with the Rob Heathcote-trained Northern Decree to win his second race of the day.

With the precision of a surgeon, Duric sliced his way through the field in the straight before driving the gelding hard to the line to get up in final strides.

It was a perfect day for Duric who only had those two rides at the meeting.

Young gun Cody Collis was the third hoop to help themselves to a winning double.

The first of Collis’ wins came aboard the Kevin Kemp-trained Who Ordered Dafish in the Class 2 Handicap over 1680m.

The son of Headwater kept his unbeaten record at Ipswich intact when he launched down the middle of the straight to hold off the late challenge of Godzilla to win by just over half a length.

Collis’ added a second win with Skywolf in the Benchmark 70 Handicap.

The Pat Webster-trained seven-year-old enjoyed a nice run before taking an inside run in the straight and proving strongest late to salute by a length. Skywolf shortened from $15 to $9 to land some big bets.

It wouldn’t be an Ipswich meeting without last year’s premiership winning jockey Jimmy Orman riding a winner.

The talented rider teamed up with Jonny Da Wolf in the final race of the day.

Now with the Munce stable after a stint in Victoria, the Tivaci gelding made a mess of his rivals as he raced away for a 4.3 length win.

Racing returns to Ipswich next Wednesday, the 12th of February for another midweek metropolitan program.
