PART two of the wonderful story of 1968 Ipswich Cup-winning jockey Michael Schubert continues this week in the Ipswich Tribune Today.
With his natural positivity, Michael’s life has been joyful but it has also been beset by tragedy.
After a successful start to his riding career, Michael was in hospital with broken wrists after a race fall when he was told the terrible news of his mother’s death.
With his career at a standstill after finishing his apprenticeship, Norm McCallum asked him to move to Toowoomba to ride for him. After early misgivings, it was the best move he ever made.
After he stopped riding at 37, Michael got a job driving trucks for Brisbane Livestock Transport.
Among those he carted horses for were leading Brisbane trainers Teddy Best and Billy Briscoe. He also had Might and Power and Kingston Town in the back of his truck.
After he stopped driving trucks, he began driving jockeys to the races, including Michael Cahill, Luke Dittman, Noel Callow, Madeline Wishart, and Martin Harley.
Michael still comes to the races when a jockey needs a lift and he still takes a close interest in racing, following current and upcoming jockeys.
