AS local jockey Emily Pomfrett continues her recovery from a serious raceday incident at Gatton this month, the Ipswich Turf Club and Queensland Racing Industry Support Program (QRISP) are proud to give her a kick along in a small way by donating $1500 to the injured rider.
The ITC held an Australia Day recovery sausage sizzle at their race meeting last Saturday with all funds raised going to Emily.
Boosted by a sizeable donation from local bookmaker Damien Joyce, the Club raised $1000 at the Ipswich races and QRISP has pledged another $500, bringing the total to $1500.
Emily suffered serious injuries at the Gatton races on January 4 when a horse fell on her in the mounting yard and for a time she was being treated in the intensive care unit.
She now faces a long recovery from the several severe injuries she sustained in the incident.
Emily spent many years doing different horse pursuits including eventing, dressage and show jumping, but took until her 30s to take the plunge into thoroughbred race riding. She did ride trackwork on the Gold Coast 15 years ago for a number of trainers, but it wasn’t until July last year that she had her first race ride. That was at Wondai and then a day later she rode at her first TAB meeting at Kilcoy.
She has ridden 13 winners from 106 rides and last year was named “Student of the Year” at the Racing Queensland Thoroughbred awards.
The ITC and QRISP wish Emily the best of luck on her journey to recovery.
