Ipswich Preview and Selections 17 May 2023

Date: 16-May-2023

Midweek metropolitan racing returns to Ipswich this Wednesday for an eight-race card.

While fine weather is forecast for race day, unfortunately the large amount of rain that fell on Tuesday morning will see racing take place on a heavy track. The rail is out 8m the entire course.

Race 1 - 12:33PM FOLLOW @IPSWICHTURFCLUB QTIS Two-Year-Old Colts and Geldings Maiden Plate (1200 METRES)

Not So Common (6) makes his debut for Waterhouse and Bott. The Sydney colt has had two trials leading into this and looked good in both. In the most recent he sat on speed and worked to the line well to win. Stable obviously has an opinion of him as they’ve nominated him for the JJ Atkins and BRC Sires Produce Stakes.

Rich Again (7) was well beaten by Addriel when finishing second over 1100m here on debut. That horse ran well in the Spirit Of Boom Classic on Saturday. Rich Again will strip fitter second-up and is drawn perfectly in barrier 1.

Ioane (5) is on debut for Annabel Neasham. He’s been trialing well in Sydney with placings in his two most recent trials. However, the outside gate is far from ideal.

Boomster (2) finished second by just under a length last start over 1350m here. The drop back in trip won’t hurt but he’ll need luck from an outside gate.

On Top Selection: Not So Common (6)

Race 2 - 1:08PM TAB QTIS Two-Year-Old Fillies Maiden Plate (1200 METRES)

Salt Lake Betty (11) caught the eye two starts back when doing her best work late to finish fifth at Eagle Farm over 1000m. Last start she led and did well but was run down late by the above average Russian Alliance over 1200m in a Saturday Doomben race. Will be at peak fitness fourth-up and can lead in a race with limited speed on paper.

Bangetta (2) worked home well to finish third behind Hip Hip Hurrah at Muswellbrook last start. That horse has since won a Listed race at Scone. She'll strip fitter second-up.

Very Sewreel (12) is on debut for Waterhouse and Bott. She’s had two trials in Sydney with the most recent seeing her going stride for stride with stablemate Not So Common. Wide gate is no help.

Champagne Bender (5) has had two trials in Sydney ahead of her debut here. They’ve been sound but she’ll face easier opponents here. The inside gate is a big plus.

On Top Selection: Salt Lake Betty (11)

Race 3 - 1:43PM BLONDIES POWDER COATING Maiden Plate (1350 METRES)

Money Bear (8) over raced badly last start so a crossover nose band goes on which should help him settle. His prior form was good with a luckless fifth here over 1200m when he should have gone close to winning if not for being held up. Maps to get a great run.

Easy Company (11) was narrowly beaten at Doomben two starts back before running on well for third behind Cavaup here over 1200m last start. The rise to 1350m looks suitable but the barrier is a touch sticky.

Crypto Tycoon (2) was held up last start but ran on well for a 1.2 length fifth over 1200m here last start. He’s raced well third-up before but the wide gate is a concern.

Rainewater (9) should be reaching peak fitness fourth-up and will go forward.

On Top Selection: Money Bear (8)

 Race 4 - 2:18PM THE LAWN SHED Class 1 Handicap (1350 METRES)

Sardegna (4) was very good in his local debut for Kelly Schweida where he overcome a wide gate to win over this course and distance. He’ll strip fitter second-up but will need to use his early speed to overcome the wide gate.

Savileo (1) worked home well when resuming over this course distance. He gets back and will be better over further but drops in class and will be running on.

Kalumburu (6) made a midrace move to go forward and lead at Toowoomba over 1200m last start. He sprinted strongly to win by 2.8 lengths. This is tougher but he can go forward and give a shout.

Spring Valley (11) found herself very wide last start over this course and distance and finished at the back of the pack. The start prior she found the line strongly to finish second at the Sunshine Coast. Drawn well.

On Top Selection: Sardegna (4)

Race 5 - 2:53PM SEVEN FAMILY DAY 27 MAY Class 3 Handicap (1700 METRES)

Kinetic (3) ran on strongly to win here over 1350m two starts back. Last start she stepped up to 1600m and after enjoying a nice run, was held up in the straight. Once clear she found the line strongly to make it back-to-back wins. The gate could be awkward but Ben Thompson should be able to find a forward position in a race which doesn’t look to have a great deal of speed.

Makedon (2) did a lot of work to cross and lead from the wide gate at Doomben last start so it was understandable that he weakened late to finish 3.6 lengths behind the winner. This is a significant drop and class and he’ll strip fitter third-up. Drawn well.

Pick Za Beans (12) found the line powerfully to win over this course and distance last start. This is tougher but she’s drawn to get a great run.

Silver Warrior (7) is low flying with massive wins of 4.8 and 5 lengths on the Gold Coast Poly. However, her results on the turf have not been as encouraging.

On Top Selection: Kinetic (3)

Race 6 - 3:28PM TAB IPSWICH CUP TIX ON SALE BENCHMARK 68 Handicap (1200 METRES)

Stick To Your Guns (6) led at a good tempo when resuming at Canterbury over 1250m first-up but weakened out of it to finish fifth by three-lengths. He’ll strip fitter second-up and will appreciate the drop in class. Drawn to get a good run for Melea Castle who claims 3kg.

Crazy Train (7) won over this course and distance first-up before running on strongly for fourth behind Self Indulgent in a Saturday race. She’ll strip fitter and looks well placed back at midweek level.

Rich Lister (9) resumes here following a trial win. She’s undefeated in three starts over this course and distance. The 3kg claim is a plus but she won’t want it too wet.

Moonan Me (5) resumes here and should have a good level of fitness following two trials. He races well fresh and will find this easier than races he competed in last preparation. He’s undefeated in his only start over this course and distance.

On Top Selection: Stick To Your Guns (6)

Race 7 - 4:03PM WWW.IPSWICHTURFCLUB.COM.AU QTIS Three-Year-Old Handicap (2200 METRES)

Sacred Mission (7) was narrowly beaten last start when taking on older horses over 1800m at Eagle Farm. The way he found the line suggests he’ll handle the rise to 2200m. He’ll be at peak fitness fourth-up and is drawn to get an economical run. Looks well placed back against his own age.

Cours Vite (8) broke through for his maiden win over 1666m here last start. He ran on well suggesting the rise in distance will suit.

Reisinger (11) had excuses when failing last start. Two starts back he found the line strongly to win over 1600m at the Sunshine Coast. He can mix his form but has run well over similar distances in Sydney.

Divine Purpose (3) fought well but just couldn’t run down Mishani Spartan last start over 1800m. He knows how to win having been victorious in four of seven starts. Should go forward and be in this for a long way.

On Top Selection: Sacred Mission (7)

Race 8 - 4:37PM FESTIVAL OF HORSEPOWER BENCHMARK 75 Handicap (1100 METRES)

Two Ya Got (9) opened this preparation with two wins before failing at Scone.  The Brett Cavanough-trained four-year-old gelding bounced back to form last start at Grafton in the Brushgrove Cup. He was blocked for a run but once clear worked to the line strongly to finish second by 1.3 lengths. He’s rock hard fit now and has won on heavy going before. Braith Nock’s 3kg claim is helpful.

Miss Hipstar (3) resumes here and races well fresh having won three of five first-up races. She’s a classy mare and has competed in stronger races than this. She handles wet tracks and gets 3kgs off for Cejay Graham.

Grey Defence (6) resumes here without a public trial. He loves a wet track and maps to get a great run from a low draw.

Inasec (16) led over 1100m at Toowoomba last start and proved too strong, winning by a length. She’s in peak condition and has raced well on heavy tracks.

On Top Selection: Two Ya Got (9)
