Ipswich Preview And Selections 24 August 2022

Date: 23-Aug-2022

The Ipswich Turf Club will host metropolitan racing for the second week in a row with eight races scheduled to be run on Wednesday. The track as of Tuesday is rated a Soft 5. There is a possibility of a shower Tuesday evening but a sunny day is forecast on race day. The rail is out 8m between the 1100m and winning post and 6m the remainder.

The first race jumps at 12:33 pm.

Race 1 - FOLLOW @IPSWICHTURFCLUB Maiden Plate (1350m METRES)

Speed: Stealth Flyer and Chasing Jackley will push forward and lead. Von Crumb won’t be far away from the inside gate in what should be a moderately run race.

Gear Changes: Spend It (9) Ear Muffs OFF FIRST TIME

Maple Door (4) just needs to put it together and he’ll break his maiden status here. Unfortunately that has been easier said than done. Two starts back he over-raced when third to Pretes. Last start over 1650m at Doomben, he settled a long way back after drawing wide before being held up straightening and hanging out when charging to the line to just miss the win.  If he settles closer for Jimmy Orman then he’ll be hard to hold out.

Chasing Jackley (2) stepped up to this distance for the first time last start and put in a bold showing. After drawing barrier 15 of 15, Jimmy Orman went forward and it took some time to find a forward position. He then tried to steal it on the turn by dashing clear by several lengths. He was run down in the straight but did hold on for second and was well clear of third. He draws better here and won’t have to work as hard to find the lead.

Proost (8) was fair when resuming at Doomben over 1350m. The former kiwi was also having his first start for David Vandyke. He settled handy and just didn’t have the dash when needed, finishing fourth by 1.95 lengths. Last preparation he boxed on for a 1.6 length third at Pukekohe Park over 1600m. Kyle Wilson-Taylor should settle in the second or third pair.

Von Crumb (10) found himself in the lead unexpectedly last start over 1650m at Doomben before fading in the straight. He was stepping up from 1200m so it was a solid run. He’ll be better for the experience and gets the benefit of the inside gate.

On Top Selection: Maple Door (4)

Race 2 - TAB VENUE MODE Fillies and Mares Class 2 Plate (1350 METRES)

Speed: Tesaura can lead off the inside gate and should find it easily with Cherrypick scratched.

Gear Changes: Dawn Colours (3) Tongue Tie FIRST TIME

Third Time Round (7) found plenty to win by a length at Doomben over 1350m last start. It may have only been her maiden win, but it was emphatic. Tony Gollan sends this guy straight to a Class 2 which signals confidence in this mare. When in New Zealand she didn’t disgrace herself in Group 2 and 3 company. Ben Thompson should settle handy in the small field.

Goldschlager (4) will appreciate dropping in class after finishing down the track in harder races at her past two starts. She has a very good record at Ipswich with both her wins coming here. She’ll get back but the small field should be to her advantage. Watch for her charging late.

Tesaura (6) wasn’t in the best frame of mind when finishing fourth by 4.9 lengths over 1200m at the Sunshine Coast first-up. She’ll be fitter second-up and if she gets a soft lead, she may be hard to catch.

Mexican Star (5) settled back over 1200m here last start before running on well for third behind the talented Reeanon. While she has only won once, she has only been out of the top three in three starts from 15.

On Top Selection: Third Time Round (7)

Race 3 - SCHWEPPES Class 4 Handicap (800 METRES)

Speed Map: No shortage of speed in this 800m scamper. Better Rush and Lively Lass look to be the leaders with Dream Weaving and Implacable also capable of vying for the lead.

Better Rush (2) gets her chance to bounce back to form here. Three starts back she led and won well at the Sunshine Coast over 1000m. Her past two starts over 1000m at Eagle farm and the Sunshine Coast have seen her lead before weakening out of it with 200m to go. Both races were harder than this. Sam Collett can go forward and hang on to win.

Missile Archer (3) was held up early in the straight when finishing fifth over this course and distance last start. Once clear, she found the line well to get within a length of The Billionaire. The outside gate in the small field will provide her with clean air in the run.

Dream Weaving (4) is a short course specialist from the Jason Edwards yard that has finished in the top three in four of six starts over the distance. She was sent out as favourite over this course and distance last start but had no luck, being slow away and then put into the running rail when looking to make her run. She’s capable of featuring here.

Oriental Runner (1) has been freshened after competing over further in stronger class races. The big concern is the nine-year-old hasn’t won for well over two years. This is one of only two rides for Noel Callow on the day.

On Top Selection: Better Rush (2)

Race 4 - GREAT NORTHERN BENCHMARK 58 Handicap (1100 METRES)

Speed: Husson’s Revenge will drive across from the outside gate and look to lead. There’s no shortage of runners drawn on the inside that will ensure a slick speed.

Gear Changes: Boudica's Gift (9) Blinkers OFF FIRST TIME, Husson's Revenge (2) Cross-over Nose Band OFF FIRST TIME, Maxie Tap (1) Gelded, Rebel Leader (8) Cross-over Nose Band OFF FIRST TIME, Nose Roll FIRST TIME, Tongue Control Bit OFF FIRST TIME, Winkers OFF FIRST TIME

Husson’s Revenge (2) is having his first start for Jack Bruce after previously racing with Michael Costa. There should be no concerns with fitness leading into this first-up run given he’s had three trials, the most recent resulting in a win. In his first preparation earlier this year, he won on debut before finishing in the places at his next two starts. If he drew a better gate he’d start a short-priced favourite. Unfortunately he’s got the outside gate but he looks to have the early speed to negate that.

Another Spirit (3) suffered a laceration last start when finishing 4.5 lengths eights at the Sunshine Coast. Prior to that he had form around Caribbean King and Gemelon Bolt which would stand him in good stead here. He gets back so will need some luck.

Menindee (5) has been up for some time. In fact, Husson’s Revenge defeated him at the Gold Coast back in February which was a part of this preparation. He didn’t show much here over 1100m last start but does find himself in an easier affair.

Scorch The Turf (10) resumes here on the back of two trials. He showed good early speed in the most recent when finishing a close second. Last preparation he resumed with a 2.15 length third over 1180m at Gundagai. This isn’t the strongest of races so he may show up for his fourth trainer.

Maxie Tap (1) is first-up following a 15-week break. He was last seen narrowly breaking his maiden status at Riccarton Park over 1200m. He’s since been gelded which could really switch him on and as previously mentioned, he wouldn't have to be a world beater to show up in this field.

On Top Selection: Husson’s Revenge (2)

Race 5 - TRIVIA NIGHT 16 SEPTEMBER Maiden Handicap (1200 METRES)

Speed: Outback Playboy and Mingle look to be the only go forward horses on paper.

Gear Changes: Baldassare (2) Blinkers FIRST TIME, Lugging Bit OFF FIRST TIME, Canuck (7) Blinkers FIRST TIME, Danish Boom (5) Blinkers FIRST TIME, Mingle (11) Tongue Tie FIRST TIME, Noble Indian (3) Blinkers FIRST TIME, Outback Playboy (4) Tongue Tie FIRST TIME

Outback Playboy (4) has caused Rob Heathcote no end of trouble and we haven’t seen the best of this guy. A known thinker he has had excuses in his three starts to date. He resumes here on the back of two nice trials. He finished second before winning his latest easily. From barrier 4, Jimmy Orman should be able to go forward and lead or at the very least be handy. He just needs to have his mind on the job.

Madame Odette (10) is on debut for Tony Gollan. She’s had two trials in preparation for this. Her first saw her finish second to Hang Five in March. She was then spelled before winning her second trial earlier this month. On each occasion she showed good early speed which suggests Georgie Cartwright should make full use of barrier 3.

Mingle (11) was disappointing in her only race start in December. She was sent to the paddock after that and resumes here. She’s had three trials leading into this. She won two back on heavy track before finishing behind Outback Playboy at her latest. Tends to get back but watch for her running on.

Plums Akimbo (8) went back when debuting at the Sunshine Coast over 1000m before making some late ground to finish 5.3 lengths fifth. He’ll be better for the experience and the rise to 1200m suits.

On Top Selection: Outback Playboy (4)

Race 6 - THE BARN FAMILY RESTAURANT BENCHMARK 65 Handicap (2200 METRES)

Speed: Rapaport can lead this field but may get company from Tycoon Player.

Gear Changes: Rapaport (1) Tongue Tie FIRST TIME

Luvyouanytime (7) is on a four day back-up after running on well for a 2.4 length seventh behind Brown Thomas at Doomben over this distance. That was a BM78 and he now drops back to a BM65. Two starts back he was narrowly beaten in a heads up, heads down situation by Go Millo over this course and distance. Perhaps the latter horse was favoured in the run. He races well here and gets Jimmy Orman in the saddle.

Go Millo (8) as just mentioned defeated Luvyouanytime over this course and distance at his last start. He got a great run that day and that may not come as easy here from barrier 10. He has the miles in his legs so will no doubt be strong late.

Tappy’s Lad (4) looks an out and out stayer. He resumed at the Sunshine Coast over 1800m and after settling second toiled away, lacking dash to remain in second. Prior to coming to Australia he won twice over this distance and also over 2500m in New Zealand.

Bury Road (5) went for home a long way out last start over 2217m at Grafton and proved a winning move. He showed plenty of fight given he had to carry 62kg. He’ll be fitter here fourth–up and can go on with it.

On Top Selection: Luvyouanytime (7)

Race 7 - IEEC.COM.AU BENCHMARK 65 Handicap (1350 METRES)

Speed: All Fairy Prince can drive forward and look to hold the lead from the inside gate. Gentle Prince, Marnie’s Star and Evita La Vie can all be handy.

Gear Changes: Princess Sparkles (10) Visors OFF FIRST TIME, The Houseman (12) Blinkers OFF AGAIN, Winkers FIRST TIME

Gentle Prince (2) had been racing in good form with two wins from four starts this preparation prior to Pat Duff throwing him in the deep end last start. He led the Saturday Class 3 Plate over 1600m at Eagle Farm before weakening mid-straight. Back to this grade looks his go. Wendy Peel who claims 1.5kg can settle in a handy position and give him every chance.

Adalissa (7) drops back in trip after doing too much work and fading over 2060m at Doomben last start. The drop back in distance here is a plus. The start prior she worked home well for third at Eagle Farm over 1600m. She just needs some luck from the wide gate.

All Fairy Prince (4) has been freshened after pulling himself off the canvas to win over 2000m at Gatton last start. He drew wide that day but gets the benefit of the inside gate here. Angela Jones is riding in great form and put him in the right spot.

Evita La Vie (5) ran super two starts back when narrowly beaten at Eagle Farm over 1800m. Unfortunately her three runs around that have been lacklustre so must take on trust. If she can replicate her Eagle Farm second then she’s right in this.

On Top Selection: Gentle Prince (2)

Race 8 - SIRROMET Colts, Geldings and Entires Class 2 Plate (1350 METRES)

Speed: Argyle Lane and Early Crow will push forward and take up the running.

Gear Changes: Bonbora (11) Blinkers FIRST TIME, Tongue Tie FIRST TIME, Early Crow (6) Brow Band FIRST TIME, Millward (13) Blinkers FIRST TIME, Smytzer (14) Blinkers AGAIN

Argyle Lane (2) is looking to keep his unbeaten record intact. After defeating the speedy Win Burn on debut he stepped up to 1200m at the Sunshine Coast and despite being green in the straight, easily accounted for his rivals to win by 2.3 lengths. The talented gelding is a half brother to Incentivise so should enjoy the rise to 1350m. Michael Murphy can lead or box seat and send punters home on a winning note.

Danezel (5) didn’t have a great deal of luck when finishing 2.6 lengths fifth over this course and distance last start. He drops back from a BM72 to a Class 2 and should be fitter third-up. Tends to get back so will need Jasmine Cornish who claims 1.5kg to get him off the fence prior to straightening so he’s not held up.

Brentwood (12) worked home well for a 1.9 length fourth over 1200m here when resuming. He was found to have been suffering the thumps so it was a good effort. He’ll be better second-up and will appreciate the extra distance.

Millward (13) is on the quick back-up after finishing off well over this course and distance considering he was caught deep in the run. The start prior he won in fine style at Doomben. He gets the blinkers on for the first time which is a plus.

On Top Selection: Argyle Lane (2)
