Local trainer gets a win with Crymenotears New

DARK clouds couldn’t dim the fun for revellers at the annual St Eddies get together at Ipswich racecourse on Saturday.

A team of 200 gathered on The Terrace to celebrate the annual event, as eight races were run and won underneath them on a Soft 5 rated track.

While the clouds looked ominous throughout the day, fortunately rain avoided the Turf Club for the most part and the track condition remain unchanged throughout the day.

The Chris and Corey Munce show rolled on, landing a winning treble to add to their double at last Wednesday’s midweek fixture.

Punters were on board with the infield stable as Cabaletto ($2.05), Intruder ($1.65) and Around The Buoy ($2.15) all saluted as favourites, each steered by Justin Huxtable.

While the Munce stable and Huxtable took training and riding honours respectively on the day, it was an earlier winner that may well have the biggest future.

Gold Coast-based trainer Paul Shailer was on course to watch his promising two-year-old Isti Star dominate the opening event to win by almost 5.5lengths. The daughter of Better Than Ready was steered by Dylan Turner, who is a key track rider for the Shailer stable.

Isti Star had been nominated for the Group 3 Ken Russell on the Gold Coast, but after missing out there, Shailer switched to Ipswich where he was able to pick up an additional $18,000 in QTIS bonuses on top of the race’s $16,800 prizemoney for first place.

Popular local trainer Jesse Townsend was in the winning list late in the day with Crymenotears prevailing to land the Ratings Band 0-58 Handicap under Corey Sutherland, saluting at the juicy odds of $17.

Attention now switches to this Wednesday, where the club will run nine races, including the $105,000 Bat out of Hell, which was re-scheduled to Ipswich after the last race was abandoned from the Gold Coast on Saturday.
