Munce doubles up New

THE Ipswich Turf Club welcomed a crowd of more than 1500 on Monday as the big local crowd enjoyed the club’s annual family day.

The Terrace lawn was filled with young children playing happily as an exciting eight-race card played out in front of them. In the forecourt area, children were treated to a free giant slide and rock climbing wall, while our canteen and a number of food trucks were kept busy servicing the hungry patrons.

It was a glorious autumn day in Ipswich and the track was served up in perfect condition – our track team welcoming some overdue sunshine and good fortune in avoiding the heavy rain that hit Brisbane overnight.

The meeting also saw a return to starts at our 1350m chute after recent renovation works were carried out to alleviate water damage caused by the big wet to start the year.

The Chris and Corey Munce stable backed up from a winning double at Eagle Farm on Saturday to land another two winners. The well-fancied Boomroux (Tahlia Fenlon) took out Race 4 to the cheers of punters, before the stable landed an upset blow with Caishen (Justin Huxtable) winning as a $17 chance.

Later, Tony Gollan and Angela Jones extended their respective Ipswich premiership leads when the $3.10 favourite Jenchick Boom took out The Industry School Benchmark 65 Handicap (1200m).

The best clash of the day came in the final event when dual city winner Captain Fenkel ($2.70) got the better of $1.80 favourite Mister Bianco to win the final event on the card. The Marcus Wilson trained Captain Fenkel, ridden by Damien Thornton, lumped his 60kg in good style, marking a successful return in his first start since January this year.

Earlier Mike Crooks’ prominent colours caused a boilover in the opening event of the day, when the Donna Stanbridge trained and Olivia Kendal ridden Mishani Extreme bowled over the Gollan-trained hotpot Before Anyone Else ($1.24) in the Seven QTIS 2YO Handicap (800m).

The Bevan Laming trained Call Da Vinci bounced back for odds-on backers in the following race, winning impressively under Jaden Lloyd after being backed in to start a dominant $1.20 favourite in the TAB QTIS 2YO Handicap (1350m).

Michael Morrison and Brandon Lerena combined to land the third event with Mad Ana ($5.50), while the biggest upset came when Sean Cormack guided Better Yet home to win the Ipswich Tribune BM62 (1710m) for the Indiana Turner stable at odds of $51.

We're back in action this Saturday, May 10, before another quick turn around for next Wednesday's midweek metropolitan fixture (May 14).
