Premierships awarded
The Ipswich Turf Club crowned its 2024-25 Premiership winners at a gloomy metro midweek fixture on Wednesday.
Grey skies were the order of the day and intermittent rain kept falling, but the track stood up beautifully and the six-race card was successfully run on a Soft 5 surface.
Tony Gollan was crowned the leading trainer of Ipswich winners for a ninth time, while the two ladies who dominated the metro riding Premiership also fought it out at Ipswich.
Just as was the case in the city, Angela Jones came out on top in the overall Jockey Premiership, while Emily Lang was named leading apprentice for the second time at Ipswich.
Thanks to our sponsors Diageo for the great prizes each of our Premiership winners were awarded.
Gollan and Jones later combined to land Great Aspirations a winner of the Great Northern Benchmark 65 Handicap.
Ryan Maloney took out riding honours on the day, landing a double on the impressive Soul Of Spain ($2.40) for the Chris Waller stable and Cherish The Day for David Vandyke.
Soul Of Spain took a while to wind up in the straight, but once he hit top gear his class shone through and he’s likely to chase better races over more ground in coming months.
Cherish The Day was less straight forward. Initially Maloney was disappointed to be edged out by Carnegie Hill (Jace McMurray) in a thrilling duel, but there was more to come in the stewards room.
Maloney lodged an objection and was able to successfully argue a heavy bump with Carnegie Hill in the closing stages cost his mount the race and stewards agreed, upholding the protest.
The club races again next Friday, one of just three meetings remaining before the annual track renovation, which will see racing cease at Ipswich from September 10 through until October 17.
We look forward to seeing everyone here for the big Friday fixture next week!
